Why It Matters
Although present in tiny quantities, basophils can offer clinical clues when interpreted in context. Elevated basophils may accompany allergic reactions, hypothyroidism, or in less common cases a myeloproliferative process such as chronic myeloid leukemia, so a persistently high count warrants attention. Low or absent basophils can appear with acute infection, hyperthyroidism, or around ovulation and is rarely a concern on its own. Because the numbers are small, basophils are most meaningful alongside the rest of the differential and markers of allergy and inflammation.
