Ozone Therapy
Medical application of ozone (O3) to stimulate oxygen metabolism, modulate immunity, and exert antimicrobial effects.
Evidence Summary
Ozone therapy has extensive European clinical use and a growing evidence base, though quality varies by application. A 2025 randomized controlled trial (Frontiers in Medicine, n=62) found ozone major autohemotherapy added to standard care improved neurological recovery (NIHSS, Barthel Index, MoCA scores) after acute ischemic stroke with no signal of organ toxicity -- an early, single-center finding that needs replication before broader use. A 2025 meta-analysis of 13 RCTs (Evidence-Based Dentistry) found ozone as an adjunct to periodontal scaling and root planing modestly reduced pocket depth and gingival inflammation versus scaling alone, with no significant benefit for plaque control or attachment level. Antimicrobial and immune-modulatory effects remain the best-supported mechanisms. Ozone therapy is not FDA-approved; the FDA issued a 2019 consumer warning citing insufficient evidence of safety and effectiveness, so it should be pursued only through experienced practitioners following established safety protocols (G6PD deficiency screening, proper gas-phase administration to avoid embolism).

Mechanism of Action
Ozone creates controlled oxidative stress, activating Nrf2 pathway, enhancing antioxidant systems, improving oxygen utilization, and modulating immune response.
Who Is This For?
Chronic infections, immune dysfunction, vascular disease, anti-aging. Screen for G6PD deficiency.
Protocol & Dosing
Dose
MAH: 50-200ml blood + ozone 20-60 mcg/ml. Rectal: 100-300ml at 30-40 mcg/ml.
Frequency
2-3x/week acute, weekly maintenance
Duration
10-20 session series
Protocol Summary
Various routes: IV (Major Autohemotherapy), rectal insufflation, local injections. MAH most common for systemic effects.
Interactions & Precautions
Contraindications
- G6PD deficiency
- Hyperthyroidism

- Active hemorrhage
Potential Risks
- •Improper administration risks
- •Oxidative stress if overdosed
Potential Side Effects
