    Resistance training is among the most robust longevity interventions. A 2026 analysis of 147,374 adults from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and the Nurses Health Studies (up to ~30-year follow-up) found roughly 90-120 minutes/week of resistance training associated with about 13% lower all-cause mortality, 19% lower cardiovascular death, and 27% lower death from neurological disease, with no additional benefit beyond about 2 hours/week; combining resistance and aerobic exercise was associated with up to about 45% lower all-cause mortality. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis reported roughly 10-17% lower all-cause, cardiovascular, cancer, and diabetes mortality, and a 2024 older-adult cohort (n=216,339) found modest but significant reductions that were stronger in women. These are observational associations, and benefits depend on safe technique and progressive overload. Muscle mass and strength are strong predictors of healthy aging.

    Mechanism of Action

    Mechanical tension drives muscle protein synthesis, mitochondrial biogenesis, and favorable hormonal and myokine signaling (including IGF-1 and irisin), helping preserve type II muscle fibers that are otherwise lost with age. Regular training improves insulin sensitivity and glycemic control, increases bone mineral density, and maintains functional capacity and metabolic rate.
