    Ageless argues that aging is not an inevitable backdrop to life but a biological process with identifiable causes, and that because it is the dominant risk factor for nearly every disease of later life, treating the process itself would do more good than treating each disease separately once it arrives.

    Steele builds the book on the hallmarks of aging, the research framework that organises the field: senescent cells accumulating and signalling inflammation, telomere attrition, mitochondrial dysfunction, epigenetic drift, loss of proteostasis, stem cell exhaustion and chronic low-grade inflammation. Each gets a chapter covering both the biology and what might be done about it — senolytics to clear senescent cells, immune rejuvenation, cellular reprogramming, and metabolic interventions. He closes on the part most books skip: why this research is underfunded relative to its potential, how clinical trials for aging would have to be designed, and what it would mean for a regulator to treat aging as an indication.

    It works well as a first book for a reader with no biology background, and it also holds up for someone already reading in the field, largely because of how carefully it is referenced.

    On evidence, this is one of the strongest entries in the library. Steele is consistently explicit about the difference between what has been shown in cells, what has been shown in mice, and what has been shown in humans — a distinction that most popular longevity writing blurs. He is candid about uncertainty and avoids predicting timelines he cannot support. The main caveat is simply the date: the field moves quickly, and almost none of the interventions described had human outcome data when the book was published. That remains largely true, which is worth holding onto as you read about what is coming.
