The Biohacker's Handbook
A comprehensive guide to self-optimization covering sleep, nutrition, exercise, and mental performance.
About this book
The Biohacker's Handbook is a reference work rather than an argument. Its organising claim is that human performance rests on a small number of foundations — sleep, nutrition, exercise, mind and work — and that most people should build those thoroughly before reaching for anything exotic. The ordering itself is the thesis: sleep comes first, and the book is unusually insistent about it.
The format is closer to an illustrated textbook than a popular health book. Each domain is broken into physiology, measurement, and intervention, with diagrams, tables, protocols and extensive citation throughout. Sovijärvi and his co-authors cover circadian biology and sleep architecture, macronutrients and specific foods, strength, aerobic and mobility training, stress physiology, meditation and breathing, and an array of tracking tools and lab markers, with practical detail on what to measure and how to interpret it.
It is well suited to someone who wants a single desk reference covering the whole territory, and to practitioners who want a structured overview of what their patients are reading and doing. It is not a narrative book and does not reward reading front to back.
On evidence, this is one of the more disciplined entries in the biohacking category, and the citation density is a genuine strength — you can usually trace a claim back to something. The caveat is that referencing is not the same as appraisal. Breadth this wide means depth varies, and the book does not consistently distinguish a claim resting on large randomised trials from one resting on a small pilot or a mechanistic study. Some supplement and device sections state benefits more confidently than the cited work supports, and a reference published in 2019 will be out of date in the faster-moving areas. Used as an index — a way to find the physiology, the relevant markers and the primary literature on a topic — it is genuinely useful. Used as a protocol to follow wholesale, it inherits the genre's usual problem of treating everything as equally established.
