    About this book

Greenfield's argument is that human performance is a stack of interlocking systems, and that most people plateau because they optimise one system while ignoring the rest. The book is less an argument than a catalogue: roughly 600 pages moving through brain and cognition, gut health, hormones, fitness, recovery, sleep, longevity and, in the closing sections, purpose and spiritual practice.

The structure repeats across chapters. Greenfield states a physiological rationale, then lists interventions roughly in order of cost and invasiveness — habits first, then nutrition and supplements, then devices, then clinical procedures. He writes as an endurance athlete and coach drawing heavily on self-experimentation, and the real value is the map. Few books lay out the full range of what people in this field are actually doing, from breathwork and cold exposure to peptides, nootropics and light therapy, in one place.

It suits a reader who already has sleep, training, protein intake and alcohol under control and wants to see what the next tier looks like. Someone new to the topic will find the volume hard to prioritise, because the book gives a four-page supplement stack roughly the same weight as sleep regularity.

On evidence, the quality varies sharply within a single chapter and the book rarely signals the difference. Recommendations on resistance training, aerobic base work, protein, sleep timing and light exposure sit on firm ground. Much else — many of the supplement combinations, several device protocols, and portions of the hormone and detoxification material — rests on mechanism, animal data or personal experience rather than controlled human outcomes. Greenfield also has commercial relationships across a number of the products he discusses, which is disclosed but easy to lose track of at this length. Treat it as an index of what exists in the field rather than a protocol, and check anything you intend to act on against the underlying evidence and your own clinical picture first.
