    About this book

The Starretts' argument here is that durability, not performance, is what most people actually need, and that a small number of basic physical capacities — getting to the floor and back up, extending the hip, breathing well, walking enough, balancing on one leg — predict how well you will function over decades. Lose them quietly and everything else narrows.

The structure is ten vital signs, each with an assessment you can do at home and a matched daily practice. They include a sit-and-rise test, hip extension and shoulder and neck range, a balance and gait check, breathing mechanics, time spent on the floor, squat position, walking volume, food quality and protein, and sleep. Each chapter explains what the test is measuring and why it matters, then gives a ten-minute practice to work on it. It is deliberately less technical and less demanding than the authors' earlier work, and closer to a general-population book than an athlete's manual.

That makes it a reasonable starting point for a reader in midlife who is not injured but is noticing stiffness, and for anyone who wants an objective baseline rather than a subjective sense of how they are doing.

On evidence, the tests are the strongest element. Several of them — sit-to-stand performance, gait speed, single-leg balance, grip and general mobility measures — have published associations with function and mortality risk in older adults, so the book is measuring things that carry real prognostic weight. The practices themselves are sensible, low-risk and consistent with general physical activity guidance, but the specific ten-practice package has not been tested as a programme, and improving a test score does not by itself demonstrate a change in the outcomes those scores are associated with. The nutrition and sleep chapters are brief and broadly mainstream. As an accessible, honest framework for maintaining physical capacity, it is one of the better books of its type, provided you read the tests as useful markers rather than as a prediction about any individual.
