Food Fix
How to save our health, our economy, our communities, and our planet—one bite at a time.
About this book
Food Fix argues that the food system is a single upstream cause sitting beneath several apparently separate crises: chronic disease, soil degradation, climate emissions, rural poverty and rising health care costs. Mark Hyman's claim is that individual dietary advice cannot succeed while agricultural policy, subsidy structures and corporate lobbying continue to make ultra-processed food the cheapest and most available option.
The book is built as a policy argument more than a nutrition manual. Hyman traces commodity subsidies and their effect on the relative price of processed versus whole foods, examines food marketing to children and the funding of nutrition research, describes industrial agriculture's effect on soil carbon and water, and covers federal food assistance and school meal programmes. He closes with proposals aimed at legislators, institutions and businesses as well as individuals.
It is for readers interested in why the food environment looks the way it does, and for anyone working on food policy, institutional purchasing or public health.
On the evidence, the political and economic reporting is the book's strongest material and is largely consistent with the work of agricultural economists and public health researchers. Two cautions apply. The nutrition claims woven through it are stated with more certainty than the underlying science supports, particularly where individual dietary changes are linked to specific disease outcomes. And the case for regenerative agriculture as a major climate solution, which Hyman presents with considerable confidence, remains genuinely contested among soil scientists. Estimates of how much carbon such practices can sequester, and for how long, vary widely. The diagnosis that food policy shapes health outcomes is well founded. Some of the proposed remedies are argued more forcefully than the current evidence justifies.
