    Immune

    Philipp Dettmer
    2021

A journey into the mysterious system that keeps you alive.

    About this book

Immune is an explanation rather than an argument. Philipp Dettmer sets out to make the human immune system comprehensible to a reader with no biology background, on the premise that it is among the most complex systems in the body and almost nobody outside medicine has a working picture of it.

The structure follows the biology. It begins with barriers and the innate response — complement proteins, macrophages and neutrophils arriving at damaged tissue, inflammation as a coordinated process rather than a malfunction. It then moves to the adaptive system: dendritic cells carrying antigen to lymph nodes, the selection of T cells and B cells that happen to match a given threat, antibody production, and immunological memory that makes the second encounter with a pathogen different from the first. Later chapters apply that machinery to allergy, autoimmune disease, cancer immunology, HIV and how vaccines work. Illustrations carry a large share of the explanation.

It is for beginners, and it is genuinely good at that job. Patients trying to understand an immune-mediated condition, a cancer immunotherapy, or the biology behind vaccination will find this clearer than most alternatives.

On the evidence: the content reflects mainstream textbook immunology rather than any contested position, and the book does not sell a protocol, a diet or a supplement for immune function — a notable absence in a category full of them. The main trade-off is deliberate. Dettmer uses heavily anthropomorphic language, describing cells as deciding, hunting and communicating, which makes the material memorable but obscures that these behaviours emerge from molecular signalling rather than intent. Immunology also moves quickly, and frontier areas such as microbiome-immune interaction and newer cancer therapies are treated briefly. Read it to understand what your immune system is doing; it is not clinical guidance and does not claim to be.
