    Juvenescence

    Jim Mellon
    2017

Investing in the age of longevity and the coming revolution in aging science.

    About this book

Juvenescence argues that the biology of aging has become tractable enough to invest in, that the companies working on it will constitute a major industry, and that the window for early capital allocation is open now. It is an investment thesis, and understanding that shapes everything about how to read it.

Mellon surveys the science in service of that case: senolytics, stem cell therapies, organ and tissue regeneration, repurposed metabolic drugs, gene therapy and computational drug discovery. He then moves to the part the book exists for — the companies, platforms and funding structures in the sector, and how a non-specialist investor might evaluate them. The framing throughout is that a scientific inflection point creates an asset class, and the reader's job is to identify which bets have the best odds.

The audience is investors and anyone who wants a map of how longevity science is financed and commercialised. That perspective is genuinely useful, and it is not covered well elsewhere.

On where it sits, two things are worth stating plainly. First, this is not clinical guidance and does not pretend to be: it makes no attempt to tell you what to do for your own health, and it should not be read that way. Second, the science chapters are secondhand summaries written to support an investment case, which means they are optimistic by construction — the book's job is to make a case, not to weigh it. The company-level content is also substantially out of date; since 2017 some of the named companies have merged, failed, or reported disappointing trial results, and the sector's valuations and structure have shifted considerably. Read it for how the commercial side of longevity works, and get your science from sources that are not also selling a thesis.
