    About this book

Shawn Stevenson's premise is that sleep quality is built during the day, not at bedtime, and that most people can improve it by changing a set of ordinary daily behaviours. The book is organised as 21 changes, with a suggested 14-day sequence for applying them.

The strategies cluster around a few mechanisms. Light comes first: getting daylight early in the day to anchor circadian timing, and reducing bright and screen light in the evening so that the transition to sleep is not delayed. Environment follows — keeping the bedroom cool, dark and quiet, and reserving the bed for sleep. Then timing: a caffeine cut-off well before bed, an earlier rather than later exercise slot, attention to how alcohol fragments sleep even when it speeds sleep onset, and a consistent schedule. The remainder covers stress, evening wind-down routines, and a set of supplement and environmental suggestions.

It is written for beginners who want a short, readable checklist rather than a clinical programme, and it works reasonably well at that level.

On the evidence: the quality is mixed and worth separating. The core recommendations — morning light exposure, reducing evening light, a regular schedule, caffeine timing, a cool dark room, regular exercise — are consistent with mainstream sleep science, even where the effect of any one change is modest. Other material in the book is not. Grounding or earthing, claims about electromagnetic field exposure disrupting sleep, and several supplement recommendations are stated with considerably more confidence than the research supports. Readers should treat the book as an accessible entry point and check anything beyond the fundamentals. For chronic insomnia, cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia is the first-line treatment and a better place to start; for anyone who snores heavily or wakes unrefreshed despite adequate hours, suspected sleep apnoea needs clinical assessment rather than habit changes.
