The Sleep Solution
A practical guide to solving sleep problems and achieving optimal rest.
About this book
W. Chris Winter MD argues that most people who believe they cannot sleep are sleeping considerably more than they think, and that the real problem is usually the relationship with sleep rather than a deficit of it. His claim is that anxiety about sleep, and an inaccurate picture of one's own nights, do more to sustain insomnia than any physiological fault.
The explanatory core is the two-process model: sleep pressure builds across waking hours, while circadian timing sets when that pressure converts easily into sleep, and insomnia often reflects a mismatch between the two rather than an inability to sleep. He adds sleep-state misperception, in which people significantly underestimate how much they slept, and conditioned arousal, in which the bed becomes a cue for wakefulness. The practical steps that follow are those of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia — consolidate time in bed, hold a fixed wake time, get up when awake, stop trying. Separate chapters cover sleeping medications and their limits, sleep trackers and the anxiety they generate, and the symptoms that genuinely warrant a sleep study, including possible apnoea and movement disorders.
It is written for anxious sleepers, tracker-watchers, and people who have concluded they are simply bad at sleeping.
On the evidence: the book sits within mainstream sleep medicine and is built on CBT-I, the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia, so the central advice is well supported. One thing to note is the tone. Winter deliberately de-emphasises the population-level associations between chronic short sleep and cardiometabolic risk, because alarming an anxious sleeper is counterproductive. That is a defensible therapeutic choice rather than a claim that sleep duration does not matter, and readers should understand it as such. He is appropriately direct about referring suspected sleep-disordered breathing for clinical assessment. It pairs well with a structured CBT-I programme.
