    Smarter Not Harder

    Dave Asprey
    2023

The biohacker's guide to getting the body and mind you want through laziness.

    About this book

Asprey's argument is that effort and results are not proportional, and that the body is built to conserve energy rather than to improve. Training and health programmes fail, on this account, not because people lack discipline but because they apply large volumes of stimulus the body is designed to blunt. The fix is to find the smallest signal that forces adaptation and then stop.

His framing device is what he calls the MeatOS — the body treated as an operating system running efficiency routines beneath conscious control. Working with it rather than against it means short, high-intensity stimuli delivered precisely: very brief maximal intervals rather than long cardio sessions, heat and cold exposure, breath-hold and altitude-style hypoxic work, targeted nutrition, and light. He calls these slope-of-the-curve interventions, on the logic that the rate of change in a stimulus, not its total dose, is what triggers adaptation. The book pairs each with devices and protocols and a recovery-first emphasis.

It is written for a time-constrained reader who is already training and suspects they are doing more than necessary, and for people drawn to instrumented, measurable approaches.

On evidence, the core claim has real support. Low-volume high-intensity interval protocols produce meaningful cardiorespiratory adaptations in a fraction of the time of steady-state work, and hormetic stressors including heat and, less consistently, cold have a growing literature. Where the book overreaches is in generalisation. The operating-system framing is a metaphor, not physiology, and it is used to carry conclusions the underlying studies do not support — particularly around specific devices, stacking multiple stressors, and the claim that minimum-dose approaches match or beat higher volumes across every outcome. Endurance, muscle mass and bone still respond to volume. Several recommended technologies are expensive and commercially linked, with little independent outcome data. Take the efficiency principle seriously; treat the specific protocol list as provisional.
