Stolen Focus
Why you can't pay attention and how to think deeply again in a distracted world.
About this book
Stolen Focus argues that the widespread difficulty people have holding attention is not a personal failing to be fixed with willpower or a better app, but the predictable result of systems designed to capture it. Johann Hari frames the problem as structural and collective, and resists the idea that individual discipline is the answer.
He sets out roughly a dozen contributing causes. The most developed is the surveillance-advertising business model, in which platforms earn revenue in proportion to engagement and therefore optimise for interruption. Around it he places chronic sleep restriction, constant task-switching, work without slack, diet and food-system changes, air pollution and lead exposure, the collapse of unstructured play in childhood, and the stress of insecure work. His proposed remedies are mostly regulatory and social rather than personal, though he also describes his own months offline.
It is for readers who want to understand why sustained concentration feels harder, and for anyone thinking about technology policy, workplace design or children's screen use.
On the evidence, the book is strongest where it reports on the incentives of attention platforms, drawing on interviews with people who built them. It is weaker where it treats attention as a measurable quantity in decline across the population. The data supporting a broad collapse in attention spans are thinner than the framing suggests, and at least one researcher Hari cites publicly disagreed with how their work was presented. Several of the environmental causes, notably pollution and sleep, have real supporting literature but are associated with outcomes more modestly than the book's cumulative argument implies. Read it for the structural analysis, which is valuable, and treat the individual causal claims as leads rather than settled findings.
