    Super Agers

    Steven N. Austad PhD
    2021

The remarkable science of staying young and what it means for living a longer, healthier life.

    About this book

Steven Austad's work approaches aging from an angle most longevity writing ignores: instead of studying the same handful of laboratory organisms, look at the species that already age remarkably well, and ask what they are doing that we are not. Austad is a comparative biologist of aging, and this perspective runs through everything he writes.

The argument behind the approach is straightforward. Naked mole rats live far longer than their body size predicts and show unusual resistance to cancer. Some bat species live decades despite metabolic rates that should be punishing. Certain whales, tortoises and bivalves reach ages that would be unimaginable in similar-sized mammals. These are not curiosities — they are evidence that lifespan and disease resistance are malleable, that evolution has solved the problem repeatedly and by different routes, and that the mechanisms involved may be identifiable and eventually actionable in humans. Austad is also known for a long-running public wager with another researcher about how long the first very long-lived human will live, which usefully forces the field to put dates on its predictions.

The comparative view is a good corrective for anyone whose reading has been dominated by mouse studies and supplement claims, because it shifts attention from interventions to underlying biology.

On evidence, comparative biology occupies a particular position. It is strong on demonstrating what is biologically possible and on generating hypotheses, and weak on translation: knowing that a naked mole rat resists cancer is a long way from a human therapy, and species differ in ways that make direct transfer unreliable. Austad has generally been among the more measured voices in the field, sceptical of overclaiming and clear about how far the animal evidence can be pushed. Read this for the biology and the long view rather than for anything you can act on tomorrow.
