The Autoimmune Solution
Prevent and reverse the full spectrum of inflammatory symptoms and diseases.
About this book
The Autoimmune Solution argues that autoimmune conditions share a common upstream origin and that addressing it can quiet the immune system's attack on the body's own tissue. Amy Myers proposes that genetic susceptibility only becomes disease when environmental triggers are present, and that the decisive trigger is increased intestinal permeability — the gut barrier becoming porous enough to allow food proteins and microbial fragments into circulation, where they provoke an immune response that misidentifies the body's own tissue.
Her framework identifies what she frames as the four principal contributors: gluten and other inflammatory foods, gut dysbiosis and overgrowth, environmental toxins including heavy metals and mould, and chronic infections and stress. The program is a 30-day elimination protocol removing gluten, dairy, grains, legumes, sugar, alcohol and nightshades, supported by gut-repair supplements, probiotics, sleep and stress work, and testing for food reactivity, thyroid antibodies and toxic exposure.
It is written for people already diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, or with symptoms they suspect are autoimmune, who want an approach built around diet and environment.
On the evidence, intestinal permeability is a real and actively studied phenomenon, and there is reasonable mechanistic interest in its relationship to autoimmunity. Where the book diverges from mainstream rheumatology and gastroenterology is in the certainty of the causal chain and in the language of reversal. The leaky gut model remains a hypothesis rather than an established mechanism for most autoimmune diseases, elimination diets have not been shown in controlled trials to induce remission across these conditions, and several of the tests recommended — IgG food panels in particular — are not validated for diagnosing food reactions. Elimination can genuinely help some individuals identify triggers, and the dietary pattern is not unreasonable, but the real risk is a reader concluding that diet can substitute for immunosuppressive or disease-modifying therapy. It cannot, and stopping prescribed treatment on the strength of this book would be a serious mistake.
