About this book
Lugavere's argument is that brain health is not a separate department of health but the downstream result of how you sleep, move, eat, and what you are exposed to — and that the same metabolic and vascular processes that drive heart disease also shape cognition. Having written previously about diet and the brain, he widens the frame here to the whole environment a brain sits in.
The book is built around a set of levers. Morning and daytime light exposure and consistent sleep timing to stabilise circadian rhythm. Movement, including both aerobic work and resistance training, presented as among the most reliable interventions for cognition. Metabolic health, with insulin resistance treated as a central threat to the brain. Food quality, weighted toward protein, vegetables, seafood and fat, with processed food and added sugar as the main targets. Stress and social connection. And a substantial section on environmental exposures — endocrine disruptors in plastics and personal care products, air quality, and heavy metals. The writing is personal; his mother's dementia is the acknowledged motivation.
It works well for a general reader who wants one coherent lifestyle framework rather than a diet, and it is accessible without being thin.
On evidence, most of the book tracks mainstream research reasonably closely. The associations between exercise, sleep, metabolic health, social connection and cognitive outcomes are supported by substantial observational work and, for exercise, by trial data. Lugavere is a science journalist rather than a researcher, and he generally represents that literature fairly. The weaker section is environmental toxicity. Concerns about endocrine disruptors are legitimate and actively studied, but the human evidence linking typical everyday exposures to specific cognitive outcomes is preliminary, and the confident, actionable tone of those chapters runs ahead of it. Much of the nutrition material is also observational, where confounding is hard to rule out. A sound entry point, read with that one section held more loosely.
