The Immortality Key

The Immortality Key argues that a psychoactive sacrament stood at the centre of ancient Greek religious practice, above all in the Eleusinian Mysteries, and that the practice carried forward into the earliest Christian communities — making the original eucharist, on Muraresku's reading, a drugged wine rather than a symbolic one.

The method is historical and archaeological rather than scientific. He builds on the pagan continuity hypothesis, the argument that early Christianity absorbed far more from Greek mystery religion than orthodox history allows, and on earlier work proposing that the Eleusinian drink was contaminated or deliberately spiked with ergot, a fungus that produces compounds related to LSD. To that he adds archaeochemistry: residue analysis of ancient drinking vessels, including findings at sites in Spain, and interviews with researchers, classicists and Vatican archivists. The book is structured as an investigation, and it reads like one.

The audience is readers interested in the history of religion, the origins of Christianity, and the long human relationship with psychoactive plants.

On where it sits, this needs saying clearly, because the book is often filed alongside health writing. It is a work of historical argument and contains essentially nothing about aging, longevity or health. It is also not about clinical psychedelic therapy, and it should not be read as evidence for or against that separate and much better-documented field. The central thesis itself is contested: the direct chemical evidence is drawn from a small number of sites, specialists in classics and archaeology have pushed back on how far those findings can be generalised, and the continuity argument from Greek ritual to Christian practice rests largely on inference rather than documentation. Muraresku is a compelling writer and mostly honest about the gaps, but the confidence of the framing exceeds the strength of the evidence. Treat it as a provocative hypothesis about the past, not as settled history.
