    About this book

The Inflammation Spectrum argues that inflammation is not a condition a person either has or does not have, but a continuum along which everyone sits somewhere, and that the point of intervention is to move back toward the quieter end before a diagnosis arrives. Will Cole's premise is that many common complaints — fatigue, brain fog, joint aches, digestive trouble, skin problems — reflect a low-grade inflammatory state that conventional testing often does not capture.

The method is a structured elimination and reintroduction program. Readers begin with a quiz intended to identify which body systems appear most affected, then remove a defined set of commonly reactive foods for a period, then reintroduce them one at a time while tracking symptoms. The reintroduction step is the operative part: the book's argument is that food reactions are individual, so a general anti-inflammatory diet is less useful than a personal map of what a given person actually reacts to. Lifestyle elements, including sleep, stress and movement, sit alongside the dietary work.

It is aimed at general readers with persistent non-specific symptoms who want a systematic way to test whether food is contributing.

On the evidence, the elimination-and-reintroduction method is a legitimate clinical tool, used in a targeted way for conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and suspected food intolerance, and self-directed versions can help some people identify a genuine trigger. The framework around it is weaker. The inflammation spectrum is a popular metaphor rather than a diagnostic category with defined criteria, the self-assessment quizzes are not validated instruments, and IgG-based food sensitivity testing of the kind Cole favours is not supported for diagnosing food reactions and is advised against by allergy organisations. The practical risk is over-restriction: long elimination lists can narrow the diet, strain nutrition and, for some people, feed disordered eating patterns. Persistent symptoms deserve a diagnostic workup before a dietary experiment.
