    The Molecule of More

    Daniel Z. Lieberman MD
    2018

How a single chemical in your brain drives love, sex, and creativity.

    About this book

The Molecule of More argues that dopamine is best understood not as a pleasure chemical but as the chemistry of anticipation and possibility. Daniel Lieberman and Michael Long propose a division: dopamine governs wanting, pursuit and the imagined future, while a separate set of what they call here-and-now neurotransmitters, including serotonin, oxytocin and the endorphins, governs the experience of what is actually present.

The framework explains a familiar pattern. Desire is strongest before acquisition and fades quickly after, because the system is built to predict and pursue rather than to savour. The authors extend this to early romantic love giving way to attachment, to addiction as a hijacking of the pursuit circuit, to the restlessness that accompanies ambition, and to a proposed link between dopaminergic temperament and creativity, mental illness and political outlook.

It is for readers who want a single organising idea for why achievement often fails to satisfy, and for anyone interested in the psychology of wanting.

On the evidence, the foundation is real. The distinction between wanting and liking, and dopamine's role in reward prediction error rather than pleasure itself, is one of the better-established findings in behavioural neuroscience. The problem is the extrapolation. Dopamine is not a single-purpose system, and the book's use of it to explain personality types, creative genius, political affiliation and the arc of civilisations is speculative rather than demonstrated. The tidy opposition between dopamine and the present-focused chemicals is a simplification that working neuroscientists would qualify heavily. Read it as a useful metaphor for the psychology of anticipation, well told, rather than as an accurate map of how these systems actually operate.
