    The Power of Rest

    Matthew Edlund MD
    2010

Why sleep alone is not enough—a 30-day plan to reset your body and mind.

    About this book

Matthew Edlund MD argues that rest is not the absence of activity and not the same thing as sleep. It is an active physiological state that can be entered deliberately, practised and improved — and that most people, having collapsed the whole category into sleep, never use it.

His framework divides rest into kinds. Physical rest covers deliberately slowed, paced breathing and brief relaxation practices that shift the body out of an aroused state. Mental rest involves directed attention and imagery rather than the passive distraction of a screen. Social rest is the restoration that comes from unhurried contact with other people. Spiritual rest, in his usage, means time spent in meaning, ritual or the natural world rather than anything doctrinal. Each comes with short techniques designed to take somewhere between 2 and 20 minutes, on the argument that the barrier to rest is not usually the absence of hours but the absence of a method.

It is written for people who sleep adequately and still feel depleted, and for anyone looking for an alternative to caffeine and screens in the afternoon.

On the evidence: the individual components have reasonable support. Slow paced breathing measurably shifts autonomic balance, brief relaxation and imagery practices reduce markers of stress and arousal, and social connection is consistently associated with better health outcomes. What is not established is the framework itself. The four categories are the author's organising heuristic rather than a validated model, and the programme has not been tested as a package in controlled trials. The book also dates from 2010 and predates much of the current research on naps, recovery and rest in performance contexts. These are sensible, low-risk practices worth trying. They are not a treatment for insomnia, and fatigue with a possible medical cause deserves assessment rather than a rest technique.
