    The Telomere Effect argues that the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes are not fixed by genetics but respond to how a person lives, and that chronic psychological stress in particular accelerates their shortening. Elizabeth Blackburn, who shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of telomerase, wrote the book with health psychologist Elissa Epel, and the collaboration shows: it moves between molecular biology and behavioural science with unusual fluency.

    The mechanism is straightforward to follow. Telomeres shorten each time a cell divides, and when they become critically short the cell stops dividing and enters senescence. The enzyme telomerase can restore telomere length, and its activity appears sensitive to sleep, exercise, diet, social connection and — the authors' central interest — the body's response to sustained stress. Their argument is not that stress is unavoidable but that the pattern of response matters, distinguishing challenge responses from threat responses, and that cumulative adversity, including in childhood, leaves a measurable cellular signature.

    The book is written for general readers, with practical chapters on stress, sleep, nutrition and environment. Clinicians will find the mechanistic sections more substantial than most popular longevity writing.

    On the evidence, this is the most solidly grounded title in this part of the library. The underlying telomere biology is Blackburn's own field and is described carefully, and the authors are candid about the difference between association and causation in the behavioural research. The open question, which they acknowledge, is clinical: telomere length varies widely between healthy individuals, measurement methods differ, and it is not established that lengthening telomeres improves health outcomes or that telomere length is a useful target for intervention. Direct-to-consumer telomere testing has outpaced the evidence supporting it. Treat the lifestyle recommendations as sensible on their own merits, and the telomere measurement as an area still being worked out rather than a number to manage.
