    About this book

The Thyroid Connection argues that large numbers of people with genuine thyroid dysfunction are missed or inadequately treated because testing stops at TSH, that most hypothyroidism in countries with adequate iodine is autoimmune, and that autoimmunity itself has upstream drivers worth addressing rather than simply medicating the end result.

The framework is functional-medicine root cause. Myers argues for a fuller thyroid panel including free T4, free T3, reverse T3 and thyroid antibodies, then identifies what she considers the drivers of autoimmune thyroid disease: intestinal permeability, gluten and other dietary triggers, toxic exposures, chronic infections and unmanaged stress. A 28-day plan follows, combining an elimination diet, gut repair, stress work and supplement recommendations.

It is aimed at people who feel unwell, have been told their TSH is normal or that their dose is adequate, and want somewhere else to look.

On evidence, two threads in the book point at real clinical questions. TSH-only testing does omit information, thyroid antibodies are often not checked when they should be, and a meaningful minority of people on levothyroxine remain symptomatic despite normal labs — all of these are live discussions in endocrinology rather than fringe positions. What follows from them is weaker. The chain from intestinal permeability to autoimmunity to reversal by dietary elimination is mechanistically plausible and actively researched, but it has not been established in controlled human trials, and evidence for gluten elimination in non-coeliac Hashimoto's specifically is limited and inconsistent. Reverse T3 is not a validated clinical target. Thyroid disease requires proper testing and usually lifelong prescription treatment, and adjusting or stopping thyroid medication on the basis of a book is unsafe. Read this to sharpen what you ask for, not to replace what you are prescribed.
