The UltraMind Solution
A functional medicine approach to fixing your broken brain through nutrition and lifestyle.
About this book
The UltraMind Solution argues that most problems people experience as mental — low mood, anxiety, poor focus, memory trouble, fatigue that reads as depression — originate in the body rather than the brain, and that treating the brain in isolation misses where the disturbance actually lives. Mark Hyman's phrase for this is a broken brain from a broken body, and the book was among the earlier popular arguments for treating psychiatry as a systems problem.
The framework is built on what he calls seven keys: nutrition, hormones and blood sugar regulation, inflammation and immune balance, digestion and the gut, detoxification, energy metabolism and mitochondrial function, and mind-body factors including stress and sleep. Each is paired with laboratory testing, dietary change and a supplement regimen, and the book closes with a six-week program intended to address several keys at once.
It is written for general readers with persistent cognitive or mood symptoms who have not found answers in a conventional consultation, and for practitioners interested in the functional-medicine approach to psychiatry.
On the evidence, this is a book worth reading in the context of its 2008 date. Its central direction has aged reasonably well: the relationship between metabolic health, inflammation, sleep, the gut and mental health has since attracted serious research attention, and nutritional and lifestyle psychiatry are now recognised fields. The specifics have aged less well. The detoxification and heavy metal chapters rest on weak foundations, several of the recommended tests are not clinically validated, and the supplement protocol is large, costly and untested as a package. Most importantly, the book predates much of the evidence it anticipated, so its confident causal claims were not supported at the time of writing. It is a useful early articulation of an idea that later research took up, not a treatment plan, and diagnosed mood or cognitive conditions warrant proper clinical assessment.
