    About this book

The Upward Spiral argues that depression is best understood as a self-reinforcing pattern in brain circuits rather than a fixed state, and that the same property which keeps a downward spiral turning can be used to reverse it. Alex Korb's central claim is that no single change is required. Small actions in any part of the loop shift the others, and the effects compound.

The framework centres on the interaction between the prefrontal cortex, which handles planning and deliberate control, and the limbic system and basal ganglia, which handle emotion and habit. In depression, Korb argues, the deliberate system is both overworked and less effective, while worry and rumination become habitual. He then works through specific levers, each tied to a circuit: exercise, sleep regularity, daylight exposure, gratitude practice, making decisions rather than maximising them, physical touch and social contact, and setting goals small enough to actually complete.

It is for readers who want a mechanistic account of why behavioural change helps in low mood, and for anyone who finds abstract advice less motivating than knowing what it is meant to be doing.

On the evidence, this book sits on reasonably solid ground. Its practical recommendations align closely with behavioural activation, one of the better-supported psychological treatments for depression, and with sleep and exercise interventions that have their own trial literature. The honest caveat is that the neuroscience is explained more cleanly than it exists. Attributing a specific behaviour to a specific circuit is a simplification, and the imaging work behind several of these explanations is more provisional than the confident prose conveys. The recommendations are sound; the brain-circuit narrative around them is a teaching device. Depression that is severe or persistent warrants clinical assessment, not a book alone.
