    Nick Lane's argument is that the deepest question in biology is not about genes but about energy. Simple cells arose early and then stayed simple for billions of years; complex cells appear to have arisen once. Lane proposes that the constraint and the solution were both bioenergetic.

    The mechanism starts with a fact that is textbook and often underappreciated: cells do not run directly on chemical fuel but on proton gradients pumped across membranes, a process called chemiosmotic coupling. Lane argues that life began where such gradients occur naturally, in alkaline hydrothermal vents, where thin mineral barriers separated fluids of different acidity. He then argues that the origin of complex cells required a singular event — one cell acquiring another, which became the mitochondrion. Internal mitochondrial membranes gave the host vastly more energy available per gene, which in turn permitted large genomes, large cells and the elaborate machinery eukaryotes possess. From that single premise he derives explanations for sex, why there are two sexes, why a germline exists, and why mitochondrial function is tied to fertility and to ageing.

    It is for readers with some biology behind them; this is the most demanding book in the science section. Anyone interested in mitochondria for longevity reasons will find here the clearest lay account of why they matter.

    On the evidence: the chemiosmotic foundation is established science, and Lane is a working researcher arguing a case within his own field rather than a journalist summarising one. The larger thesis is a hypothesis under active debate. The alkaline vent scenario for life's origin competes with genuine alternatives, and other researchers have directly challenged whether energy per gene was the real constraint on prokaryotic complexity. Lane says plainly that he is arguing, not reporting consensus. The chapters linking mitochondria to ageing are the most speculative and carry no protocol.
