    About this book

The Wahls Protocol sets out a nutrient-dense dietary and lifestyle approach developed by Terry Wahls, a physician who has multiple sclerosis and who went on to study diet in MS as a clinical researcher. Her argument is that mitochondrial function and myelin maintenance depend on a dense supply of specific micronutrients, and that a typical diet supplies too few of them to support cells already under strain.

The dietary core is concrete: nine cups of vegetables and fruit daily, divided into three cups of leafy greens for vitamins and minerals, three of sulphur-rich vegetables such as cabbage, onion and broccoli for detoxification pathways, and three of deeply coloured produce for polyphenols. Grains, legumes, dairy and eggs are removed, with quality animal protein, organ meat, seaweed and fermented foods added. The book presents three progressive levels, from a paleo-style baseline to a ketogenic version, and surrounds the diet with exercise, electrical muscle stimulation, stress reduction and sleep.

It is written for people living with multiple sclerosis or other progressive conditions, and for their families and clinicians, though the dietary pattern itself is broadly applicable.

On the evidence, the honest position is that this is a dietary approach that has been studied in small trials, mainly for fatigue and quality of life in relapsing-remitting MS, with some encouraging results in those specific outcomes. Those studies have been small, often single-arm or short in duration, and are not powered to assess disability progression, relapse rate or lesion burden. Nothing in the research base supports describing the diet as a treatment for multiple sclerosis or as something that reverses the disease, and the author's own recovery is a single case that cannot establish general effect. The diet is demanding but nutritionally reasonable for most people. It should be considered alongside, and never instead of, disease-modifying therapy prescribed by a neurologist.
