    Young Forever

    Mark Hyman MD
    2023

The secrets to living your longest, healthiest life through functional medicine.

    About this book

Young Forever argues that aging is a treatable process rather than an inevitability, and that the way to approach it is to work systematically through the underlying biology rather than chase individual diseases. Mark Hyman builds the book around the hallmarks of aging described in the research literature — cellular senescence, mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired autophagy, chronic inflammation, microbiome disruption, and others — and proposes that each can be influenced by diet, lifestyle and targeted intervention.

The framework is functional medicine applied to longevity. Hyman groups the hallmarks into what he calls root causes, then maps a program onto them: a whole-food, low-glycemic, protein-adequate diet; time-restricted eating and periodic fasting; strength and aerobic training; sleep and stress work; and a substantial layer of laboratory testing, supplementation and, for those who want it, newer interventions such as peptides, hyperbaric oxygen and senolytic compounds. The writing is energetic and the practical chapters are detailed enough to act on.

It is aimed at motivated general readers, and particularly at people already inclined toward a personalised, test-driven approach to their own health.

On the evidence, the book is best read in two layers. The hallmarks framework is real science drawn from mainstream aging research, and the foundational recommendations — dietary quality, resistance training, sleep, stress regulation, social connection — are well supported and worth following. The second layer is where the distance opens. Many of the specific supplements, the extensive biomarker panels, and the emerging interventions discussed have preclinical or early human data at best, and the combined protocol has never been tested as a whole. Hyman also has commercial interests in the supplement and testing space. None of this makes the book unserious, but its confident tone runs ahead of the underlying data in places, and decisions about testing, peptides or senolytics belong in a clinical conversation rather than a reading list.
