A consensus roadmap from the SENESCENCE2030 network towards precision senescence medicine
A multi-stakeholder consensus roadmap naming the blocking constraints on clinical senescence medicine: no functional classification of senescent states, no standardised clinically actionable biomarkers, no established regulatory framework for an aging indication. For clinicians fielding senolytic questions, the useful signal is what the field's own consensus does not claim - there is currently no validated way to select patients or define the target cell population.

Full Abstract
At the SENESCENCE2030 Annual Conference and Industry-Academia Workshop held in Coimbra, Portugal, in May 2026, researchers, clinicians, industry representatives and policy stakeholders identified the major priorities required to translate recent advances in cellular senescence research into clinical practice. The resulting roadmap emphasizes the need to establish functional classifications of senescent states, develop standardized and clinically actionable biomarkers, advance precision senescence medicine, strengthen translational and regulatory frameworks, and promote international collaboration.
Key Findings
- 01
Functional classification of senescent states named as a prerequisite for clinical translation
- 02
No standardised, clinically actionable senescence biomarker currently exists
- 03
Precision senescence medicine identified as the intended direction of travel
- 04
Translational and regulatory frameworks named as a blocking constraint
- 05
International collaboration and standardisation emphasised

- Methodology
- Multi-stakeholder consensus process at the SENESCENCE2030 Annual Conference and Industry-Academia Workshop, Coimbra, Portugal, May 2026, involving researchers, clinicians, industry representatives and policy stakeholders; published as a Meeting Report.
- Limitations
- A consensus roadmap carries no experimental weight of its own and reflects the priorities and composition of the participating group, which included industry representatives. It reports no new data and makes no claim about the efficacy or safety of any specific compound.
