    6/10 Evidence

A keto-carotenoid pigment produced by the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis and concentrated up the food chain in krill and wild salmon. Unlike most carotenoids, astaxanthin's molecular structure spans the entire cell membrane, allowing it to neutralize reactive oxygen species on both the inner and outer, water-facing surfaces simultaneously. It does not convert to vitamin A, so it carries no hypervitaminosis-A risk even at higher intakes. It is one of the most studied marine-derived antioxidants for skin, inflammatory, and early cardiovascular markers.

    Mechanism of Action

Astaxanthin's tail-to-tail polyene structure positions it across the full width of the lipid bilayer, giving it broader radical-quenching coverage than membrane-surface antioxidants like beta-carotene or vitamin E. It activates the Nrf2 antioxidant-response pathway, reduces lipid peroxidation (measured as MDA), and lowers inflammatory markers such as CRP and IL-6 in several small-to-moderate randomized trials. It crosses the blood-retina and, to a meaningful degree, the blood-brain barrier, which underlies interest in eye and neurological applications.

    Dosing Protocol

    Recommended

    6–12mg

Standard starting dose based on research

    Therapeutic Range

    4

    Minimum

    to

    20

    Maximum

    mg

With a meal containing fat — astaxanthin is fat-soluble and absorption is substantially higher when taken with dietary fat

    Cycling Protocol

No established cycling requirement; trial safety data extend to continuous daily use for several months

Dosages are general guidelines. Individual requirements vary based on body weight, health status, and specific goals. Start with lower doses and adjust based on response.

    Benefits

    Primary Benefits

    • Reduces markers of oxidative stress (malondialdehyde) and inflammation (CRP) in multiple small-to-moderate randomized controlled trials
    • Improves skin hydration, elasticity, and reduces UV-induced wrinkle formation in placebo-controlled trials, including a 2026 cohort in Japanese participants examining skin, hair, and nails
    • Investigated as an adjunct in heart failure: an 8-week randomized controlled trial (20 mg/day) assessed effects on inflammatory markers, oxidative stress, lipid profile, blood pressure, and endothelial function

    Secondary Benefits

Visual fatigue and eye strain in screen-heavy occupations (small randomized trials)
Exercise-induced muscle damage and endurance markers (mixed results across trials)
Endothelial function and arterial stiffness (early-stage, mostly small trials)

    Safety Information

    Contraindications

Do not use if any of the following apply:

    • •Known allergy to the algae, shellfish, or fish source — check whether a product is algal- or krill/salmon-derived
    • •Caution with concurrent anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy given a theoretical additive effect

    Drug/Supplement Interactions

May interact with the following. Consult a healthcare provider before combining:

Theoretical additive antiplatelet effect with anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel) at higher doses — human interaction data are limited
May modestly lower blood pressure — theoretical additive effect with antihypertensive medications

    Potential Side Effects

    Some users may experience:

Very well tolerated across trials lasting several months
    Rare mild gastrointestinal upset
High intakes can cause a harmless reddish-orange skin tint (carotenodermia), similar to excess beta-carotene

This is not a complete list of interactions or side effects. Individual responses vary. Always start with the lowest effective dose and monitor your response. Report any adverse effects to your healthcare provider.

    Quality Markers

Look for these specific quality indicators when sourcing this compound:

    • Prefer natural Haematococcus pluvialis-derived astaxanthin, the form used in nearly all human trials, over synthetic astaxanthin used in aquaculture feed (not validated in human trials)
    • Third-party testing for isomer purity — natural sources are predominantly the 3S,3'S stereoisomer used in clinical research
    • Formulated in an oil carrier or softgel for absorption; dry powder capsules without a lipid base are poorly absorbed

    Trusted Certifications

    NSF Certified
    USP Verified
    GMP Certified
    ConsumerLab Approved

Note: Supplement quality varies dramatically between brands. Cheap supplements often contain fillers, incorrect doses, or contaminants. Investing in quality products from reputable manufacturers is essential for safety and efficacy.
