    4/10 Evidence

A trace-mineral supplement used to support insulin sensitivity and glycaemic control. Trials in type 2 diabetes show a modest HbA1c reduction, but the evidence base is dated, heterogeneous, and benefit in people without diabetes or chromium deficiency is unproven.

    Mechanism of Action

Chromium is proposed to enhance insulin receptor signalling (via chromodulin), improving glucose uptake in insulin-resistant tissue. Deficiency is rare in healthy adults, and the role of chromium as an essential nutrient is debated.

    Dosing Protocol

    Recommended

400mcg per day of elemental chromium (Adequate Intake about 25-35 mcg/day from food)

Standard starting dose based on research

    Therapeutic Range

    200

    Minimum

    to

    1000

    Maximum

mcg per day of elemental chromium (Adequate Intake about 25-35 mcg/day from food)

With meals, once daily or split; allow 8-12 weeks and track HbA1c or fasting glucose

    Cycling Protocol

Reassess benefit at 3 months with HbA1c or fasting glucose; stop if no response rather than continuing indefinitely

Dosages are general guidelines. Individual requirements vary based on body weight, health status, and specific goals. Start with lower doses and adjust based on response.

    Benefits

    Primary Benefits

    • Modest reduction in HbA1c and fasting glucose in people with type 2 diabetes
    • May support insulin sensitivity in insulin-resistant adults

    Secondary Benefits

Possible reduction in carbohydrate cravings and appetite (small trials)
    Possible modest triglyceride reduction (inconsistent)
Studied in atypical depression (small, inconsistent)

    Safety Information

    Contraindications

Do not use if any of the following apply:

    • •Kidney or liver disease unless supervised
    • •Pregnancy and breastfeeding above recommended intake
    • •Insulin or sulfonylurea therapy without glucose monitoring
    • •Prior reaction to chromium or picolinate

    Drug/Supplement Interactions

May interact with the following. Consult a healthcare provider before combining:

Antidiabetic drugs and insulin — additive glucose lowering; monitor for hypoglycaemia
Levothyroxine — may reduce absorption; separate by 4 hours
Antacids, H2 blockers and PPIs — may alter absorption
NSAIDs and corticosteroids — may alter chromium absorption or retention

    Potential Side Effects

    Some users may experience:

    Headache
    Dizziness
    GI upset
    Rash or hives (uncommon)
Rare case reports of kidney injury at high doses
Hypoglycaemia in combination with glucose-lowering drugs

This is not a complete list of interactions or side effects. Individual responses vary. Always start with the lowest effective dose and monitor your response. Report any adverse effects to your healthcare provider.

    Quality Markers

Look for these specific quality indicators when sourcing this compound:

    • Label states mcg of elemental chromium, not mcg of compound
    • Chromium picolinate (Cr III) only; avoid hexavalent chromium
    • Third-party tested for dose accuracy and heavy metals
    • Avoid proprietary blends that hide the dose

    Trusted Certifications

    NSF Certified
    USP Verified
    GMP Certified
    ConsumerLab Approved

Note: Supplement quality varies dramatically between brands. Cheap supplements often contain fillers, incorrect doses, or contaminants. Investing in quality products from reputable manufacturers is essential for safety and efficacy.

    Evidence Profile

    Evidence Score

    4/10

    Emerging/Anecdotal

Limited clinical data, primarily mechanistic studies or user reports

    Classification:
Emerging/Moderate (scored 4). A 2014 systematic review and meta-analysis of 25 placebo-controlled RCTs in diabetes (searches to May 2013) found HbA1c lower by 0.55 percentage points (95% CI -0.88 to -0.22), with effects clearest above 200 mcg/day and with chromium picolinate, and no excess adverse events. A more sceptical review of six earlier meta-analyses concluded limited effectiveness because evidence strength was low (HbA1c fell 0.5% or more in only 5 of 14 studies). No newer meta-analysis was found in this review, and benefit in non-diabetic adults is not established. Evidence
