    Ginkgo Biloba (EGb 761)New

    Supplement
    Nootropics
    5/10 Evidence

A standardized leaf extract (EGb 761: 24% flavone glycosides, 6% terpene lactones) used for cognitive complaints and mild dementia. Evidence supports modest benefit in established mild dementia, but trials do not show it prevents dementia in healthy older adults.

    Mechanism of Action

Flavonoids and ginkgolides provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, improve microcirculation and red-cell deformability, and antagonize platelet-activating factor. Preclinical data suggest protection of mitochondrial function and reduced amyloid toxicity.

    Dosing Protocol

    Recommended

240mg per day of standardized extract (24% flavone glycosides, 6% terpene lactones), in 1-2 divided doses

Standard starting dose based on research

    Therapeutic Range

    120

    Minimum

    to

    240

    Maximum

mg per day of standardized extract (24% flavone glycosides, 6% terpene lactones), in 1-2 divided doses

With meals, split into two doses; allow 8-24 weeks to judge benefit

    Cycling Protocol

Studied continuously for 6-12 months in dementia trials; reassess benefit at 3 months and stop if no response

Dosages are general guidelines. Individual requirements vary based on body weight, health status, and specific goals. Start with lower doses and adjust based on response.

    Benefits

    Primary Benefits

    • Modest improvement in cognition, daily activities and global function in mild-to-moderate dementia (240 mg/day EGb 761)
    • Support for circulation-related symptoms

    Secondary Benefits

Possible reduction in tinnitus and vertigo symptoms (inconsistent)
Possible benefit in claudication walking distance (small effect)

    Safety Information

    Contraindications

Do not use if any of the following apply:

    • •Bleeding disorders or planned surgery — stop about 2 weeks prior
    • •Seizure disorders
    • •Pregnancy and breastfeeding
    • •Allergy to ginkgo or related plants (mango, cashew, poison ivy)

    Drug/Supplement Interactions

May interact with the following. Consult a healthcare provider before combining:

Anticoagulants and antiplatelets (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, DOACs) — potential increased bleeding risk
    NSAIDs — additive bleeding tendency
Anticonvulsants — may lower seizure threshold, reduce efficacy
SSRIs and trazodone — rare serotonergic or sedative reports
Efavirenz and CYP2C19 substrates — altered drug levels

    Potential Side Effects

    Some users may experience:

    Headache
    Dizziness
    GI upset
    Rash
Bleeding events in susceptible individuals (case reports)
Seed-derived products are toxic — use leaf extract only

This is not a complete list of interactions or side effects. Individual responses vary. Always start with the lowest effective dose and monitor your response. Report any adverse effects to your healthcare provider.

    Quality Markers

Look for these specific quality indicators when sourcing this compound:

    • EGb 761 or equivalent extract standardized to 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones
    • Ginkgolic acid content below 5 ppm
    • Leaf extract only; no seed material
    • Third-party tested

    Trusted Certifications

    NSF Certified
    USP Verified
    GMP Certified
    ConsumerLab Approved

Note: Supplement quality varies dramatically between brands. Cheap supplements often contain fillers, incorrect doses, or contaminants. Investing in quality products from reputable manufacturers is essential for safety and efficacy.

    Evidence Profile

    Evidence Score

    5/10

    Moderate Evidence

Some clinical trials with positive results, emerging research

    Classification:
Moderate for established dementia, weak for prevention — a 2025 pooled analysis of 4 trials (n=782) in mild dementia found EGb 761 240 mg/day beat placebo on cognition (p=0.04), global assessment, daily living and quality of life with adverse events similar to placebo, but the analysis was authored with the manufacturer (Dr. Willmar Schwabe). Earlier meta-analyses show benefit with high heterogeneity and moderate effect sizes of uncertain clinical relevance. The large Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory trial (3,069 older adults, 120 mg twice daily) found no reduction in dementia incidence. Scored Moderate (5) for cognitive impairment; not supported for prevention. Search summaries were abstract-level and should be confirmed against full papers. Evidence
