Hyaluronic Acid (Oral)New
Oral hyaluronic acid (hyaluronan) is a glycosaminoglycan marketed for skin hydration and joint comfort. Small RCTs and meta-analyses suggest a modest skin-hydration benefit and promising but unsettled effects on mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis pain.
Mechanism of Action
Orally ingested hyaluronan is partly broken into low-molecular-weight fragments and absorbed in the gut; these fragments may signal fibroblasts and synoviocytes to increase endogenous hyaluronan, collagen and matrix production, and may have anti-inflammatory effects. Bioavailability and the exact signalling route in humans remain incompletely established.
Dosing Protocol
120mg per day (skin and joint trials typically 120-200 mg)
Standard starting dose based on research
Therapeutic Range
80
Minimum
240
Maximum
Once daily, with or without food; allow 8-12 weeks before judging effect
Cycling Protocol
No established cycling. Reassess pain or skin outcomes at 12 weeks and stop if no benefit
Dosages are general guidelines. Individual requirements vary based on body weight, health status, and specific goals. Start with lower doses and adjust based on response.
Benefits
Primary Benefits
- Small improvement in skin hydration (a 2022 meta-analysis of about 4 RCTs and roughly 200 adults reported SMD around +0.40; seen via secondary summary)
- Possible reduction in knee osteoarthritis pain and stiffness in mild-to-moderate disease

Safety Information
Contraindications
Do not use if any of the following apply:
- •Pregnancy and breastfeeding (insufficient data)
- •Known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid or to avian/bacterial source materials
- •Active cancer unless cleared by oncologist (theoretical, hyaluronan signalling)
Drug/Supplement Interactions
May interact with the following. Consult a healthcare provider before combining:
Potential Side Effects
Some users may experience:
This is not a complete list of interactions or side effects. Individual responses vary. Always start with the lowest effective dose and monitor your response. Report any adverse effects to your healthcare provider.
Quality Markers
Look for these specific quality indicators when sourcing this compound:
- States molecular weight and source (bacterial fermentation is typical; vegan)
- Dose per serving is 120 mg or higher for skin/joint use
- Third-party tested for purity
- Avoid proprietary blends that hide the hyaluronic acid dose
Trusted Certifications
Note: Supplement quality varies dramatically between brands. Cheap supplements often contain fillers, incorrect doses, or contaminants. Investing in quality products from reputable manufacturers is essential for safety and efficacy.
