Lutein + ZeaxanthinNew
Macular carotenoids that accumulate in the retina and brain, used to support macular pigment density, visual performance, and (in the AREDS2 formulation) slowing of progression in intermediate age-related macular degeneration.
Mechanism of Action
Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only dietary carotenoids that cross the blood-retina barrier to form macular pigment, which filters high-energy blue light and quenches reactive oxygen species in photoreceptors; they also accumulate in brain tissue and are correlated with cognitive performance.
Dosing Protocol
10mg lutein per day (with about 2 mg zeaxanthin)
Standard starting dose based on research
Therapeutic Range
10
Minimum
20
Maximum
With a meal containing fat for absorption
Cycling Protocol
Long-term daily use; macular pigment rises over 3-6 months
Dosages are general guidelines. Individual requirements vary based on body weight, health status, and specific goals. Start with lower doses and adjust based on response.
Benefits
Primary Benefits
- Macular pigment optical density (MPOD) support
- Slowing progression of intermediate AMD (as part of the AREDS2 formula)
- Visual performance (glare, contrast sensitivity)
Secondary Benefits
Safety Information
Contraindications
Do not use if any of the following apply:
- •Smokers/former smokers should avoid AREDS formulas containing beta-carotene (choose AREDS2 lutein/zeaxanthin versions)
- •Pregnancy and breastfeeding (dietary amounts are safe; high-dose supplement data are limited)
Drug/Supplement Interactions
May interact with the following. Consult a healthcare provider before combining:
Potential Side Effects
Some users may experience:
This is not a complete list of interactions or side effects. Individual responses vary. Always start with the lowest effective dose and monitor your response. Report any adverse effects to your healthcare provider.
Quality Markers
Look for these specific quality indicators when sourcing this compound:
- Free-form lutein and zeaxanthin (e.g. FloraGLO, Lutemax) matching AREDS2 doses (10 mg/2 mg)
- Combination labeled with the lutein:zeaxanthin ratio
- Third-party tested
Trusted Certifications
Note: Supplement quality varies dramatically between brands. Cheap supplements often contain fillers, incorrect doses, or contaminants. Investing in quality products from reputable manufacturers is essential for safety and efficacy.
