    Panax Ginseng (Korean/Asian Ginseng)New

    Supplement
    Adaptogens
    4/10 Evidence

The root of Panax ginseng, a traditional adaptogen standardized to ginsenosides and studied for fatigue, cognition and glycemic control. Human evidence is suggestive but inconsistent, and a 2024 review of randomized trials found no conclusive support for any specific disease.

    Mechanism of Action

Ginsenosides (Rb1, Rg1, Rg3 and others) modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, AMPK and NF-kB signaling, and nitric-oxide production. Preclinical data suggest antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects; gut-microbiome conversion to compound K affects bioavailability, so response varies between individuals.

    Dosing Protocol

    Recommended

200mg per day standardized extract (about 4-7% ginsenosides); 1-3 g/day dried root

Standard starting dose based on research

    Therapeutic Range

    100

    Minimum

    to

    400

    Maximum

mg per day standardized extract (about 4-7% ginsenosides); 1-3 g/day dried root

Morning or midday; avoid evening dosing because of stimulant-like effects

    Cycling Protocol

Commonly used 8-12 weeks followed by a 2-4 week break, or 2-3 weeks on and 1 week off; no long-term safety data beyond about 6 months

Dosages are general guidelines. Individual requirements vary based on body weight, health status, and specific goals. Start with lower doses and adjust based on response.

    Benefits

    Primary Benefits

    • Reduced fatigue (small effect) in chronic fatigue and cancer-related fatigue
    • Support for mental performance and mood with short-term use
    • Support for post-meal glucose control in some trials

    Secondary Benefits

Possible improvement in erectile function (small trials)
Possible immune support, including fewer respiratory infections in some trials

    Safety Information

    Contraindications

Do not use if any of the following apply:

    • •Pregnancy and breastfeeding
    • •Uncontrolled hypertension or arrhythmia
    • •Bipolar disorder or mania history
    • •Hormone-sensitive conditions — theoretical estrogenic activity, use clinician guidance
    • •Before surgery — stop about 2 weeks prior (bleeding and glucose effects)

    Drug/Supplement Interactions

May interact with the following. Consult a healthcare provider before combining:

Warfarin — ginseng may reduce anticoagulant effect (mixed evidence)
Diabetes medications (insulin, sulfonylureas) — additive glucose lowering
MAO inhibitors (e.g. phenelzine) — reports of mania and headache
Caffeine and stimulants — additive stimulation
    Immunosuppressants — theoretical interference

    Potential Side Effects

    Some users may experience:

    Insomnia and nervousness
    Headache
    Digestive upset
    Blood-pressure changes
Rare breast tenderness or menstrual changes

This is not a complete list of interactions or side effects. Individual responses vary. Always start with the lowest effective dose and monitor your response. Report any adverse effects to your healthcare provider.

    Quality Markers

Look for these specific quality indicators when sourcing this compound:

    • Panax ginseng (not American ginseng or Siberian eleuthero) stated on the label
    • Standardized ginsenoside content and root age/source declared
    • Third-party tested for pesticides and heavy metals

    Trusted Certifications

    NSF Certified
    USP Verified
    GMP Certified
    ConsumerLab Approved

Note: Supplement quality varies dramatically between brands. Cheap supplements often contain fillers, incorrect doses, or contaminants. Investing in quality products from reputable manufacturers is essential for safety and efficacy.

    Evidence Profile

    Evidence Score

    4/10

    Emerging/Anecdotal

Limited clinical data, primarily mechanistic studies or user reports

    Classification:
Emerging/Moderate — a 2020 systematic review (8 RCTs, plus 30 animal studies) found Panax ginseng superior to placebo for fatigue with adverse-event rates similar to placebo, and a 2023 meta-analysis found small fatigue improvements for ginseng and ginseng formulas. However, a 2024 systematic review of 65 randomized trials (Planche et al.) concluded there is no conclusive evidence supporting use for any particular disease. Trials are small, short, and use different extracts and doses. Scored Emerging (4); I could not find a recent cognition-specific meta-analysis. Evidence
