TaurineNew
Taurine is a conditionally essential amino sulfonic acid involved in osmoregulation, bile acid conjugation, and mitochondrial and antioxidant function. A widely cited 2023 Science study (Singh et al.) found that circulating taurine declines with age in mice, monkeys, and humans, and that restoring taurine levels extended both lifespan (10-12%) and healthspan in mice and improved multiple healthspan markers in monkeys. That biomarker premise has since been challenged: a 2025 Aging Cell study and NIH researchers found taurine does not decline consistently with age across species and, in women, may even rise — so its status as a human aging biomarker remains actively debated. Independent of the longevity question, taurine has firmer human evidence in cardiometabolic health: a 2024 meta-analysis of 25 randomized trials (over 1,000 participants) found doses of 0.5-6g/day modestly reduced blood pressure, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and fasting glucose, and smaller trials support benefit in heart failure exercise capacity and post-exercise recovery. Individual results vary, and large human longevity trials are still underway; discuss use with your physician.
Mechanism of Action
Taurine accumulates in high concentrations in heart, skeletal muscle, brain, and retina, where it stabilizes cell membranes, regulates intracellular calcium handling, and supports mitochondrial protein synthesis and osmotic balance. It conjugates with bile acids to aid lipid digestion and exerts direct antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that may buffer oxidative stress. In mouse studies, taurine repletion suppressed markers of cellular senescence, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA damage, and inflammaging, though whether these mechanisms produce measurable anti-aging effects in humans remains an open, actively researched question.
